Every June, we honor Pride Month; a time to recognize the history, resilience, and ongoing fight for equality within the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve seen friends and family who are part of the LGBTQ+ community face so many challenges simply for being their authentic selves. I believe it's important to recognize and honor those who have fought, and continue to fight, for equality, dignity, and the right to live openly and proudly.

Pride did not start as a celebration, but as a response to injustice. In June 1969, after years of police harassment and discrimination, the patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City fought back. The police raid on that night sparked several days of protests and lit a fire that helped fuel the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

These were not isolated events. Police raids on LGBTQ+ spaces were common and often violent, and many lives were lost simply for existing authentically. Stonewall became a turning point; a moment when the community said, "Enough."

Today, Pride is a celebration, but it is also a statement:

You are not alone.

You deserve to live and love openly.

Your identity is valid and your existence matters.

Pride is about visibility. It sends a message that it's okay to be your authentic self. That love is love. That the fight for equality and safety is not over, but it is being carried forward with strength, courage, and hope.

We carry the lessons of the past, lift up the voices of today, and move boldly toward a future where we stand together; united in love, in dignity, and in the freedom to be exactly who we are.

Pride is celebration. Pride is power.
