Today, we proudly celebrate Juneteenth, a powerful milestone marking the end of slavery in the United States. Though the journey toward freedom was uneven, with the Emancipation Proclamation and later the 13th Amendment unfolding across different states at different times, Juneteenth stands as a bold and unwavering declaration: the institution of slavery is an injustice that must be abolished.

This day honors the historic moment on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger and Union forces delivered the long-overdue proclamation of General Order No. 3, that slavery was abolished in Galveston, Texas. The first Juneteenth celebration on June 19, 1866, marked recognition of our shared humanity.

Juneteenth Lehigh Valley has been hosting events this week and today they will pay tribute to the National Negro Baseball League in partnership with the Iron Pigs. On June 22nd, there will be a parade in Easton as well as a Walk/Run 5K. More information can be found in the link below.
