The school board is meant to operate in a non-partisan manner where personal politics are left at the door and the focus is on improving our district for our students, faculty and community members.

During last Monday night's school board meeting, many people discussed their disappointment in what they have been witnessing. The last couple of meetings have been extremely combative and frankly not an environment where solutions to the district's problems could flourish.

After the student's report, I was able to speak during visitor's comments and express my concerns. I wanted to be sure that the point was not missed from the Feb 10th meeting, where a board member expressed his frustrations of the consistent poor communication between the Superintendent and the Board. Afterwards, when I heard the PSEA President & Vice President speak and discuss the issues of the vacant AP Spanish Teacher role and the Infinite Campus portal, it drove home the point that there is so much work to do.

Towards the end of the meeting during the second section of visitor's comments we were able to hear from a teacher from the Intermediate School. She was very appreciative of the work that the board has done and understanding of the strong feelings that come with the position. She expressed that if the board needs to know anything from the teachers, the board should reach out to them and hear what they have to say. The last speaker was a concerned resident and parent in the district who has seen this board have civil discussions. He emphasized that in the past couple of meetings the board has been "dysfunctional" and should "do better".

Since then, the SLSD Superintendent has taken a Leave Of Absence and coverage of this incident has been reported on The Morning Call and WFMZ 69 News. We should aim to have our school district in the news for our successes and not our deficiencies.

As a school board director, I will work respectfully with my colleagues on the board as a team. We do not have to agree on every point and we won't. We all have our own independent views and experiences that we bring to the table. We can vote accordingly and keep it moving. Our district needs forward-thinking individuals who bring their best.
